Biomechanics enhance performance by utilizing mechanical principles to improve an individual’s technique, the equipment they use, and to modify specific training protocols that the coach or trainer implements to help an individual achieve their goals.. Exercise can be seen as a mechanical stress (Force/Area), placed on the body where the body must accept forces from external sources and respond by creating the appropriate internal forces (from the muscles and connective tissue) to create the appropriate movement.. In order to facilitate the proper adaptations for our trainees, we have to understand forces, how they are applied (how much, in what direction, over what range of motion and at what speed), and how the tissues of the body will adapt to those forces.. Once the exercises are chosen, exercise instructions is the area where most coaches and personal trainers associate the importance of biomechanics.. Only after you analyze the kinematics does one look at the forces that cause the movement (as well as other forces on the body).. Another way of looking at the analysis process is to look at joints first (both moving and not moving, describing them kinematically), then the external and internal forces on the body (kinetics).. Therefore, a basic understanding of joint structure and function is essential for proper muscle activation (i.e. if a trainee is moving the joints properly, then the muscles must be working properly).. When the coach or personal trainer is evaluating any performance, they are simply comparing the “ideal” with the actual performance of the client.. Due to lifestyle changes over the past twenty five years which have seen fewer people walking and cycling, and a decrease within the proportion of people employed within manual labour, promotion of increased levels of physical activity through interventions such as those based on Prochaska and Di Clemente’s (1982) Transtheoretical Model (TTM) of behavioural change have become increasingly necessary in order to increase physical activity participation levels.. The stages of change an individual progresses through with regards to exercise behaviour can be explained using the TTM, and an individual would be considered within the Pre-contemplation stage when they have no desire to take up exercise, and are uninformed of the benefits (Prochaska & Velicer, 1997).. The Preparation stage would include individuals that have researched possible exercise options, who may have discussed the benefits of exercise with a doctor, developed a plan of action, and who intend to begin exercising to the required guidelines within the next month.. This suggests that those in the first stages of the cycle are at great risk of developing lifestyle diseases such as Cardiovascular Disease and diabetes, and must thus be targeted for interventions; possibly using a stage based approach to initially increase levels of daily activity, followed by the introduction of structured exercise later in the cycle.. However, an intervention may be able to be introduced in stages, with information and advice provided to the client in the pre-contemplation stage, in order to educate to the benefits of exercise, and what options are available, and prompt the individual to gradually increase levels of physical activity and progress through to preparation within a shorter time period than would be observed if no intervention was made until the individual had themselves reached the preparation stage.. It would be interesting to see if this theory applies to exercise prescription, and if offering three alternative exercise programmes which all subscribed to the recommended weekly guidelines, has bearing upon the level of exercise adherence as compared with being offered one set programme, or five programme options.. Adam and White (2005) suggest that stage based activity promotion interventions do not always work, and that exercise behaviour is too complex to be simplified to five stages of change.. Stage based interventions have also yet to discriminate between exercise typography, specific frequency, and duration that may be coexistent within each stage of change.. So whilst the TTM may appear to be effective when applied to exercise behaviour change, for continued exercise adherence a modified model may be required whereby other external factors are accounted for, and validity and reliability of single stage interventions, as well as a full five stage intervention offered.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate healthcare workers’ physical exercise levels linked to their quality of life. Healthcare workers’ from all departments of a General hospital participated in the study. The instruments used for data collection regarding quality of life and physical exercise (Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire-short form). Regarding the lack of physical exercise, the participants mainly put the blame on lack of free time (58%, n = 106), work hours (41% n = 75), but also pure negligence (37%, n = 67). The SF-36 scores showed that the existence of health problems can affect in a negative way and aggravate almost every quality of life parameter. Regarding physical activities in the past 7 days prior to the survey, most of them were about housekeeping and household-related chores (42.3%), followed by out-of-the-house errands (13.2%). There were also differences among mental health and postgraduate education level. According to our findings, a major factor that could boost healthcare professionals’ physical activity, is to increase knowledge and raise awareness about the benefits linked to physical activity.
The Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire [ 7 ], measures health status, taking into account physical functioning and exercise, emotional and physical role functioning, mental health in general, social role functioning, body pain and general health.. It consists of four PA indices: (1) PA during casual walking, (2) moderate-intensity activities, (3) vigorous-intensity activities, (4) total physical activity.. Regarding the lack of PA, the participants mainly put the blame on lack of free time (58%, n = 106), work hours (41%, n = 75), but also pure negligence (37%, n = 67), and the results showed also low scores on mental health compared to physical health (mean: 59.38 vs 66.49).. The ANOVA showed a significant difference among the participants’ education level and Physical Functioning (F: 2.710. p = 0.047), Physical Role (F: 3.824, p = 0.011), Mental Health (F: 4.723, p = 0.003) and overall Physical Health (F: 3.156, p = 0.26).. Also, correlating the total IPAQ scores to QoL categories and age demonstrated a positive correlation between the intensity of physical activity and Vitality (r: 0.157, p: 0.034) as well as social role functioning (r: − 0.171, p = 0.02) (Table 3 ).. Nevertheless, the intensity of PA measured in METs seems to have a positive correlation with Vitality and Social Functioning of the participants, which is in agreement with a study from Portugal that showed the positive effect of PA, not so much on QoL itself, but on everyday aspects of life.. For most of the participants physical activity levels were low, which had a correlation to other QoL factors, such as Physical Functioning, Vitality, Mental Health, Social Functioning, Pain and Physical and Mental Health .. According to our findings, neither family status nor work assignment are connected to QoL, but Vitality and Physical Role were correlated to the participants’ financial situation, and a major factor that could boost healthcare professionals’ PA, is to increase knowledge and raise awareness about the benefits linked to physical activity [ 28 ].
